Custom Sauna Construction in Bali and Jakarta
Sometimes renovation is not the answer. If the existing room has failed, sits in the wrong place for guest flow, or was never a sauna to begin with, building new is the honest recommendation — and we will tell you that rather than stretching a renovation over a bad base.
We design and build saunas as a contractor in Bali and Jakarta: indoor rooms inside existing buildings, freestanding garden cabins and glass-fronted cabins built into villa courtyards.
The timber we build with
Timber choice is where a tropical sauna is won or lost. We work with three species, each for what it actually does well:
- Red Cedar — interior cladding and benches. Stable under heat and humidity, low resin, comfortable to touch even when the room is hot, and it ages into a deeper tone rather than looking tired.
- Sungkai — exterior cladding. It takes Bali's sun and rain cycle and keeps the outside of a cabin looking deliberate.
- Bangkirai — decking and wet-area surfaces. A dense tropical hardwood for the places that get water, bare feet and traffic.
What goes on behind the panelling
The part clients never see is the part that determines lifespan: insulation, a correctly detailed vapour barrier, a ventilation path that dries the room after closing, and a floor build-up that drains. In a climate where ambient humidity is high year-round, a sauna that cannot dry itself out overnight will darken and deform no matter which timber is on the walls.
We build the envelope first and treat the visible finish as the last layer, not the project.
Indoor rooms, garden cabins and glass fronts
Indoor saunas are usually the most economical because the building already provides the shell, the power and the drainage. Freestanding cabins give you a placement choice — near a plunge pool, in a garden, on a rooftop deck — and become part of the landscape design.
Glass fronts change the character of both: they make a small room feel open and turn the sauna into a visible feature rather than a closed box. They also add heat load, which comes back to heater sizing.
Built around the guest journey
A sauna is rarely used alone. Before we finalise a layout we ask where guests change, where they cool down, where they rest and how staff service the space. The loop of hot, cold and rest is what people remember, and a few metres of poor placement can leave a beautiful room underused.
Where the brief is wider than one room, the same team designs and builds the whole wellness zone, including ice baths and cold plunges.
